Negative numbers (-150, -200) indicate the stake required to win 100 units: -150 means you must risk 150 to win 100. The format was designed around a base unit of 100, which makes it intuitive for American bettors but counterintuitive for UK punters used to calculating returns per pound staked.

Point spread betting attracts 61% of NFL bettors, per the Optimove report, and the vast majority of US-produced spread analysis uses American odds. When a US analyst says “take the Dolphins +3.5 (-110),” a UK bettor needs to know that -110 is equivalent to 1.91 decimal. The spread itself (+3.5) is the same in any format; the odds attached to it determine the payout.

Converting Between Odds Formats

I keep a conversion table bookmarked on my phone, but the formulas are simple enough to memorise with practice.

American to decimal: For positive American odds, divide by 100 and add 1. So +200 becomes (200/100) + 1 = 3.00. For negative American odds, divide 100 by the absolute value and add 1. So -150 becomes (100/150) + 1 = 1.67.

Decimal to American: For decimal odds above 2.00, subtract 1 and multiply by 100. So 3.50 becomes (3.50 – 1) x 100 = +250. For decimal odds below 2.00, divide 100 by (decimal minus 1) and add a minus sign. So 1.80 becomes 100/(1.80 – 1) = -125.

Fractional to decimal: Divide the first number by the second and add 1. So 5/2 becomes (5/2) + 1 = 3.50. And 4/5 becomes (4/5) + 1 = 1.80.

The conversion I use most frequently in practice is American to decimal, because that’s the translation needed when reading US NFL analysis. The key benchmarks to memorise: -110 = 1.91; +100 = 2.00; +150 = 2.50; +200 = 3.00; -200 = 1.50; -150 = 1.67. Once you internalise those six reference points, you can estimate any conversion within a few seconds.

From Odds to Implied Probability and Back

Understanding odds formats is useful for reading analysis. Understanding implied probability is useful for making money. The implied probability is the bookmaker’s embedded estimate of how likely an outcome is – and comparing it to your own estimate is the foundation of value betting.

The formula using decimal odds: implied probability = 1 / decimal odds. A bet at 1.91 implies a 52.36% probability. A bet at 3.00 implies a 33.33% probability. A bet at 1.50 implies a 66.67% probability. Every odds format encodes this probability, but decimal makes the calculation fastest.

The catch: implied probabilities across all outcomes in a market sum to more than 100%. On a standard NFL spread, both sides might be priced at 1.91, giving implied probabilities of 52.36% on each side – a combined 104.72%. That 4.72% overround is the bookmaker’s margin. The “true” probability of each side, with the margin removed, is closer to 50% each. Different bookmakers build different margins into their NFL lines, and the bettor’s job is to identify situations where the true probability of one side exceeds what the margin-adjusted odds imply.
